7 Steps to Turn Your Product Business Into a Subscription in 90 Days

Already selling products? Learn 7 steps to turn your product business into a subscription and build predictable, recurring revenue in 90 days.

What if you could stop starting from zero every single month?

If you’ve been selling products, whether online, at markets, or in a brick-and-mortar shop, you already know the hustle of chasing sales. You have a great month, the calendar turns, and suddenly you’re asking yourself all over again:

Where are my sales going to come from this month?

What if you could add predictable, consistent, recurring revenue to the business you’ve already built?

That’s the power of a subscription box.

And if you already have a product-based business, you have a big advantage. You have products. You have customers. You have sales data that tells you what they like to buy.

You’re not starting from scratch.

When I launched my first subscription box, I didn’t know all the things I know now. But through trial, error, and a whole lot of testing, I developed a process that works. I’ve used it to grow my own subscription business to seven figures, and I’ve taught thousands of subscription box owners inside Launch Your Box to do the same.

And you can use that process to turn your existing product business into a subscription in the next 90 days.

Let’s walk through the seven steps.

Step 1: Keep Your Tech Simple

Tech is where so many entrepreneurs get stuck before they ever get started.

They think they need complicated software, fancy automations, or a completely new website before they can launch.

They don’t. At the most basic level, you need two things:

  • A way to sell online
  • A way to collect recurring payments

That’s it.

If you’re already selling products online, you have the first one covered. Your next step is making sure your checkout system can handle recurring charges.

Don’t let tech become the thing that keeps you from moving forward. Start with what you need now. You can always add more as your subscription grows.

Check out this blog post for more on the tech you need to run a subscription box.

Step 2: Choose What Goes in Your Subscription Box

This is where having an existing product business gives you an advantage.

Start with what your customers already love.

Look at your top-selling products, categories, and collections. What do people buy again and again? What gets the best response when you share it? What types of products naturally go together?

Your existing sales give you valuable information about what your customers may be excited to receive in a subscription.

As you start planning your box, ask yourself:

  • Can I source these types of products consistently?
  • Will they ship well?
  • Can I create enough variety from month to month?
  • Does the box have a high perceived value?
  • Can I repeat this as my subscriber count grows?

Your subscription doesn’t need to be complicated or packed full of products.

It needs to create an experience your subscribers are excited to receive and will be excited to receive month after month.

Step 3: Determine Your Price

This is where many new subscription box owners trip up.

They curate a dreamy, Pinterest-worthy box first. Then they add up the costs and realize they can’t make the numbers work.

Instead, start with your price.

If you already have a product business, your current average order value is a great place to begin. What are your customers already comfortable spending with you?

Once you have a target price, work backward. Determine what you can spend on products, packaging, shipping, and other expenses while still protecting your profit margin.

Your box needs to delight your subscribers and be sustainable for your business.

Step 4: Plan Your First Six Boxes

Want to know one of the best ways to feel ahead instead of constantly scrambling?

Plan six months of boxes before you launch.

That doesn’t mean you need every product ordered or every detail figured out.

Start with the big picture. Sketch out themes, product categories, seasonal opportunities, or collections. Look at what your customers tend to buy at different times of the year.

If fall is all about cozy products for your audience, what could that look like in a box? If your customers are traveling more in the summer, what products could you curate around that?

Planning ahead helps you make sure your subscription idea has staying power. It also makes sourcing and preparing future boxes so much easier.

Step 5: Choose (and Commit to) Your Subscription Box Launch Date

This is the step that makes it real.

Mark your launch date on the calendar – ideally 45 to 60 days out.

That date becomes your anchor point. Suddenly, everything has a deadline:

  • Finalize your tech
  • Order product
  • Build your waitlist
  • Start marketing

Tell someone your date. Accountability works. When I launched my first box, I announced it to my audience before I felt ready. It kept me from backing out.

Accountability works.

Step 6: Build a Waitlist to Create Launch Momentum

Your waitlist isn’t just a parking lot for emails. It’s your launch engine.

Create a simple opt-in page that shares three things:

  • Who your box is for
  • What’s inside
  • Why it’s special

Then start building anticipation.

  • Send weekly emails.
  • Post behind-the-scenes updates.
  • Share sneak peeks.

Even a small, engaged waitlist can convert like crazy when you keep them excited.

Inside Launch Your Box, I teach waitlist strategies that turn “maybe later” followers into “I can’t wait!” subscribers. Don’t underestimate this step—it can make or break your launch.

Step 7: Prep, Test, and Launch

The last step is all about execution.

  • Test your tech so checkout runs smoothly.
  • Write your launch emails so you’re not scrambling at the last minute.
  • Plan your social media content to build buzz.

Then comes the big day. It’s time to Launch Your Box! Go LIVE. Open the doors. Announce your subscription to the world. And most importantly, get that first box into the hands of your new subscribers.

Will it be perfect? Probably not. But done is better than perfect. And once you start, you can refine, improve, and grow.
