You’ve built your audience. You’re showing up consistently, posting on social media, going live, running giveaways, and doing all the things to get more eyes on your business.

Your waitlist is growing.

It feels like it’s time to launch, right?

Not so fast.

Rushing straight from building a waitlist to launching your subscription box is one of the biggest mistakes I see new subscription box owners make.

The Missing Step in Your Subscription Box Marketing Plan

Inside Launch Your Box, I teach a 5-step subscription box marketing plan:

  1. Audience building
  2. Waitlist growth
  3. Pre-launch
  4. Launch
  5. Retention

Most subscription box owners understand the importance of building an audience and growing a waitlist. And they’re definitely focused on launching.

But that third step? Pre-launch?

It gets skipped far too often.

Your pre-launch period is when you turn the people who joined your waitlist into an engaged, excited audience ready to buy when you open the doors.

Before someone subscribes, they need to believe two things:

  • You are the right person to help them. People buy from people they know and trust. They need to know your story, understand why you created your subscription box, and feel connected to the person behind the business.
  • Your subscription box solves a problem they actually have. People don’t buy products. They buy solutions.

A hobby box might solve the problem of not knowing what supplies to buy or where to find inspiration. A self-care box gives someone permission to slow down. A pet subscription box makes it easy to spoil a much-loved pet.

Get clear on the problem your box solves before you start writing your pre-launch emails.

Then, over the two to three weeks leading up to your launch, send these six emails.

Email #1: Introduce Yourself and Your Why

Your first email should help your audience connect with you as a real person.

Share your story. Why did you start your subscription box? What problem or experience led you to create it?

This email should feel like a conversation, not a sales pitch. You’re simply giving the people on your waitlist a chance to get to know you.

Email #2: Take Them Behind the Scenes

Pull back the curtain and show your audience the parts of building your subscription box they wouldn’t normally see.

Share logo decisions, packaging choices, early product reveals, or even a picture of your desk covered in samples.

Behind-the-scenes content builds investment. When people feel like they’ve been part of the process, they’re more likely to be excited when launch day arrives.

Email #3: Connect Their Problem to Your Solution

This is the most strategic email in your pre-launch sequence.

Name the problem your ideal customer is experiencing and show them exactly how your subscription box solves it.

Be specific.

The clearer you are about the problem your box solves and the benefits it provides, the easier it is for your audience to see why your subscription belongs in their lives.

Email #4: Show Them More of the Process

Yes, you’re taking them behind the scenes again. And you’re doing it on purpose.

This time, show them what’s happening as you get closer to launch.

Share packing samples, product testing, sourcing trips, quality checks, or some of the messy middle that happens when you’re getting a subscription box ready to ship.

Every glimpse into the process builds more anticipation.

Email #5: Remind Them They Deserve It

Sometimes your audience needs permission to buy something for themselves.

Speak directly to the guilt or hesitation they may feel about spending money on something they want.

Remind them that it’s okay to treat themselves, invest in a hobby they love, make their lives easier, or look forward to something arriving on their doorstep every month.

This email is especially effective for self-care, hobby, and lifestyle subscription boxes, but nearly every potential subscriber needs a little permission before committing to a recurring purchase.

Email #6: Tease the Launch and Save the Date

Now it’s time to build anticipation.

Tell your waitlist exactly when your subscription box will launch and give them a reason to watch their inbox.

Will waitlist members receive early access? Founders pricing? First pick of a limited number of boxes?

This email is the bridge between your pre-launch period and your actual launch.

By the time you send it, your audience should know you, understand the problem your subscription box solves, feel invested in the process, and be excited about what’s coming.

What Happens After the Launch?

Get these six emails written and scheduled, and you’ll walk into launch day with a warm, ready-to-buy audience instead of a cold list.

But your email marketing doesn’t stop when you launch.

It simply shifts.

Once you have subscribers, your goal changes from convincing people to buy to keeping the people you already have excited, engaged, and looking forward to their next box.

That’s why I created a free swipe file with 5 emails you can send to your subscribers every single month.

You’ll get email templates for:
